Autumn is finally upon us, and I am trying to lock back in to something approaching a publishing schedule here...
1. Widelux Camera
A panoramic 35mm camera which was discontinued in the late twentieth century, following which the factory burned down and the blueprints were destroyed. Jeff Bridges made the thing famous, using it for behind the scene photographs and portraits. I finally got hold of one in good condition last week, and I think it's my new favourite camera.
2. Peter MacKinnon on YouTube
Every now and again something, or someone, comes along and just fires up your inspiration. For me, recently, this has been Peter Mackinnon's YouTube Channel. I won't say much, I'll just post the video that got me falling into the rabbit hole...
3. Pocket Notebooks
Following on from that, I am now putting my collection of pocket notebooks to good use. During the pandemic I took out a subscription to Nero's Notes, and they would send me a bundle of pocket notebooks every month or so. Nero is no more (RIP), but I still have stacks of these things and they are incredibly useful. Field Notes is the gold standard, but there is a huge variety of companies that make them and I have yet to come across one I didn't like.
4. Insta360 Luna Ultra
You may start hearing more about this thing, as I am planning to open up the video element of the Pure Hokum site over the next few months. The Insta 360 Luna Ultra is a 4K (technically 8K, but 4K is more practical) all-in-one video camera and gimbal. It's incredibly small, incredibly powerful, and really fun to use.
5. Thames by Peter Ackroyd
I've been reading this as part of my research for the new Lovecraft Investigations series. No surprise that Ackroyd is incredibly readable and interesting. If you haven't dipped into this one, I recommend finding a copy.
